CULTURE OF THE NORTH: BIPOC Youth Taking Action

Phase 2

Culture of the North (COTN): BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour) Youth Taking Action is a two-phase youth-led project. Phase one was developed in September of 2021, and it gained insight into the multicultural educational experiences of students who self-identify as BIPOC in Northern Ontario high schools. Its final report recommended and informed the development of phase two: implementing Equity Action Teams within two Rainbow District School Board (RDSB) high schools (Sudbury Secondary School and Manitoulin Secondary School). This report will share the outcomes of phase two, including the project funding, goals, methods, procedures, results, and recommendations.

The COTN Phase 2 youth-led project successfully extended beyond the schools into the community. It fostered collaborative interpersonal relationships between youth leaders and adult allies, promoted active anti-racism efforts, and enhanced cultural awareness through artistic representations.
